#WOTW: Blanc de Blancs Champagne for a white Christmas
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a top notch Champagne and I think a Blanc de Blancs really comes into its own with festive fare.
The ‘white of whites’ bit means it only contains Chardonnay, so the other two Champagne grapes, Pinot Noir and Meunier, are left out, resulting in focused freshness and finesse. This makes a Blanc de Blancs a stunning aperitif and the perfect pairing for smoked salmon.
Palmer and Co Blanc de Blancs Champagne (The Finest Bubble £48 or a fiver less if you buy a case, also available in good independent wine merchants) is considered to be one of the best, recently scooping the top award at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC). The judges described “a sophisticated, elegant and beautifully nuanced wine” and they are spot on. It has a fresh, refined citrus nose and there’s real intensity on the palate with a long toasty finish.
