Lidl winter wine tour: this German Pinot Noir’s the star

Lidl’s ‘wine tour‘ is always worth checking out for its limited edition one-off parcels but – unusually – this Pinot Noir is actually making a welcome return.

I first encountered Alte Vogtei Zu Ravensburg Baden Spätburgunder (£9.99 at Lidl) earlier this year, from the previous 2018 vintage, and was really impressed – so much so that I went back for a case of it. The new 19 vintage is just as good, if not slightly better.

Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir and the country’s best examples are produced in the southern region of Baden, where the warm summer days and cool nights help deliver succulent, crunchy ripe fruit.

With its bright red berries and subtle pinch of spice, this is both elegant and refreshing, with its lightness of touch making it the perfect pairing for a festive roast turkey dinner. It’s also a top quality wine for a tenner.
