M&S Classics Chianti Riserva: Wine of the Week
This week’s choice, M&S Classics Chianti Riserva, first appeared – somewhat ironically – at the end of a segment on ITV’s This Morning where I’d suggested no and low alcohol options for those valiantly maintaining a Dry January. I was permitted to throw in a recommendation at the end for those, like me, who have decided that this is not the time to be abstemious.
M&S recently overhauled their wine range, launching a ‘Classics’ series with new offerings and rebranded favourites. To be honest, I’m yet to taste most of them – conventional press tastings have all but disappeared in the pandemic – but what I have sampled so far has been impressive, overdelivering for the price – and that’s hard to achieve.
A case in point, M&S Classics No 23, Chianti Riserva 2017 (£8 at M&S stores *) is a textbook example of a modern Chianti from Cecchi, an historic family winery. Mostly Sangiovese, the grape of Tuscany, it offers fabulous fruit forward cherries and berries, a subtle savoury undertow, with dried herbs and a dusting of mocha on the finish, reflecting the judicious use of oak.
*The M&S wine range is now available on Ocado, though I have struggled to find this wine on the site.
