#WOTW: Sink the pink for Valentine’s with this Champagne

Ask a wine journalist which supermarket offers the best Champagne and the chances are they’ll say “The Co-Op”.

Its own brand ‘Les Pionniers’ is made by Piper Heidsieck, which means you’re getting a top notch product from a major name, at a lower price. The regular Brut wins most of the plaudits, but the rosé is well worth checking out too and feels more in tune with Valentine’s.

Les Pionniers Rosé Champagne (almost all Co-Op stores at £22) is quite substantial for a rosé, with bright red fruit, notes of orange peel, toasted cashews and a lovely mineral core. I think it represents a bargain, at just over 20 quid (although money is, of course, no object for your special one). It’s perfect for a luxury night in that won’t break the bank.
