Leyda Reserva Syrah: a Chilean cool climate classic

Chile so often hits the sweet spot where price and quality meet and Viña Leyda Reserva Syrah 2019 is a textbook example, especially as it’s currently on promotion, turning this well-priced wine into a proper bargain.

Chile is long and thin, so you’re never far from the sea. That Pacific coastal influence helps moderate temperatures and keep the wines fresh and juicy. Viña Leyda‘s chief winemaker Viviana Navarrete is an expert in cool coastal varieties and she was leading critic Tim Atkin’s 2020 Winemaker of the Year.

Leyda Reserva Syrah 2019 (usually around £12, it is currently £8.25 at Coop stores) offers fresh, tangy red berries and plums, a crack of white pepper and subtle spice. It’s a deliciously quaffable wine, perfect for a chicken pie, or mushroom risotto. At the promotional price, it’s also a steal.
