#WOTW: celebrate Australia Day with a cracking Cab
It’s Australia Day on Sunday, but there’s an even more important reason to buy an Aussie wine this weekend: some of the country’s winemakers have been hit by the devastating recent bush fires that have caused loss of life, millions of dollars of damage, with some vines destroyed and ‘smoke taint’ a far bigger worry.
At the Australian Trade Tasting this week, events kicked off with a short briefing on the fires. Emotions were running high, but the clear message that ‘the show goes on’ came through loud and clear, with Wine Australia (the trade body) assuring us that, once the extent of the damage is clear, nothing with taint will come anywhere near a bottle. In the meantime, the way we can all help is to buy plenty of Australian wine, already in stores from previous years.
Here’s a lovely option for a winter’s night. Wynn’s Coonawarra”The Siding” Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 (co-op stores £12) comes from one of the country’s most experienced winemakers, Sue Hodder, and it offers a lot of wine for the price! Bright, fresh blackberry and black cherry, with smooth mocha and a hint of mint. Perfect for an Australia Day Sunday roast!
