#WOTW: a turbo-charged Nero D’Avola

Nero D’Avola is one of Sicily’s great grapes and it comes in different shades. This one is big, ballsy, ripe, rich and fruity, thanks to an innovative Italian winemaking technique.

Nero D’Oro Appassimento 2018 (£8.99 at Majestic Wines on a Mix 6), is made by the very smart Stefano Girelli (read more about him here) and it uses ‘Appassimento’, in two different ways, with the some of the grapes being left on the vines, and the rest left to dry on racks for 15 days, which results in them losing up to 15% of their weight, increasing the intensity.

The result is a fragrant wine with rich dark cherries and berries, lots of smooth spice and a sweet note of vanilla. It’s big, so it’s not for there faint-hearted, but it’s also delicious, the perfect partner for a meaty pasta supper.
